Abstract

This thesis examines the history of banking and finance in Sudan from independence in 1956 until the nationalisation of the banking sector in 1970. The thesis explores how multinational banks that were present in Sudan before 1956 responded to the onset of political independence. In addition, the thesis examines banks that opened or were incorporated in Sudan after 1956, and analyses how these sought to compete with their established rivals. Finally, the thesis explores how successive Sudanese governments in this period sought to manage, regulate, and intervene in the country's banking sector as part of wider political and social projects.
