Abstract

Over the years, the synthesis of nanocrystals and the subsequent applications have been of great interest. Their large surface area enable nanocrystals to exhibit increased bioactivity, improved material properties and greater catalytic abilities. Often the syntheses of these particles need harsh reaction conditions such as high temperatures and pressures combined with the need for harmful solvents and chemicals. This thesis challenges these traditional methods by exploring novel low temperature/ambient condition routes to both an organic and inorganic system of nanocrystallisation, namely graphite and quartz. This demonstrates the capability of eliciting thermodynamic control over both organic and
inorganic crystallisation for the first time.
