Abstract

In a project to handle the records of students at a College of Education, the author has provided a suite of programmes for an IBM 36Ø/67 computer. These programmes perform the tasks of data management, establishing and maintaining the student records, and providing access to the data files for information retrieval. In this thesis the author uses this work as the basis for a discussion on Data Management Systems. A report of the College system is included and an account is given of many of the problems involved in the establishment and maintenance of Data Management Systems and in the provision of information retrieval routines. Security measures and the need to protect both the data and those it represents are also discussed, and an outline is given of some of -the problems involved in the development of a small data interchange system which the author has designed and implemented as part of the College Data Management System.
